10 Best Gifts for Single Moms (Tatted Mom Style)

Good gracious how life throws you curve balls. Around this time last year I posted Tatted Mom's List of 10 Best Gifts for a Stay at Home Mom. This year I want to carry on the tradition, but as I'm no longer a stay at home mom (damn curve balls), the list is altered somewhat. So, this year we have...

10 Best Gifts for Single Moms (Tatted Mom Style)
  1. An Alarm Clock. And a loud one. One with a huge snooze button, too, so we can hit something first thing in the morning and not get in trouble for it. Something with pleasant music to wake you up, not that annoying 'Wah wah wah wah' over and over again that makes you want to slap an elderly person just hearing it. Wake me up with ocean waves that gradually get louder... no, wait. That will make me run to the bathroom quickly. Okay, maybe sweet chirping birds... damn, will want a B.B gun then. Okay, not a morning person at all here, so just an alarm clock that works. One that gets me up so I can shower, get ready for work, get my coffee, get the kids up, get them ready, fix breakfast, head to the bus stop, then get myself to work, don't forget the conference call... ahh, gotta love mornings.
  2. Chick Flicks. We need a nice variety of chick flicks, though, because we never know what type of mood us single moms will be in at any given moment. Get the sweet, mushy ones with the happy ending for when we're feeling optimistic about life, and the ones where the man gets hit by a car at the end of it for when we're not. Best to cover all bases.
  3. Batteries- lots of them. Do I really need to explain more here? Seriously?
  4. A Personal Organizer/Date Planner. Many people have these apps on their phone, yes, but I'm old fashioned. I prefer the ones, oh, what are they called in this day and age of technology? Oh, yeah, book ones. You know, with paper, a spine, pages to write things down on. In fact, I happened to find a perfect one for me (and no, this company did not contact me in any way to advertise or review their product- I just saw it at the mall and fell in love with it) - The B Word; You Say I'm a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing 16 month weekly planner. Yes, please, for the love of everything beautiful, this is on my list for this year. Sis- when you read this- please, please, please.
  5. Free or Reduced Babysitting Vouchers. Even if it's paying your niece or the girl next door in McDonald's, free or nearly free babysitting is always appreciated. We single moms may need to go on a date, or just sleep in for a few hours.
  6. Comfy Slippers. Yeah, on last year's Stay at Home Mom list, I know, but really, it's a necessity for any mom, especially a single mom. We work during the day, and as soon as we come home (if there isn't a school function or social event the kids have to be at, of course), we want to be as comfortable as possible as soon as possible. Step one is the work shoes- we kick them off as soon as we walk into the door. Second are the work pants- off, and on come the pajama pants. Third is the bra- and let me tell you, we breathe a sigh of relief, it's one of the best feelings ever. Then the work shirt gets traded for the T-shirt, and then we want to sink our feet into a nice pair of soft, cloud-like slippers. Ahhhh... another one of the best feelings ever.
  7. A Functioning Hair Straightener. Okay, so this one may be a little personal to me. I dropped mine about a month ago and broke the part where the electrical cord plugs into the straightener. No worries, nothing a little bit of tape can't fix, but I seem to slightly electrocute myself every morning. Wakes me up, to say the least, and I'm not dead yet, so that's a plus. On a larger note, though, a hair straightener is an amazing morning routine tool. It doesn't matter if your hair is straight as can be already, a hair straightener will soften it and bring it together in a polished look. And if your hair is wavy or curly, it can change your look for a few mornings a week. I recommend the wet to dry ones, because you can actually skip the blow drying your hair step in the morning. The wet to dry hair straighteners dry your hair and straighten it at the same time. Speeds up a morning routine greatly, which is a major plus for us single moms.
  8. Gift Cards to Coffee Places. In last year's list, the coffee pot made the cut. Coffee pots are still a must for a single mom, but so are the on-the-go coffee places. Sometimes our one cup in the morning doesn't cut it, nor does the one more we take to work with us, and we don't have the pleasure of just heading to our kitchen and making more, so a trip to the evil chain coffee moguls is sometimes a necessity. If we don't have to actually pay $5 for that cup of mocha-half-non-soy-caramel-double-tall-god-knows-what-else coffee, then it's much better for us.
  9. Batteries. Wait, did I already cover that? Ah, screw it (pun intended), it's worth listing twice. Seriously. Cause... um... the kids need... um.... batteries for the.... Wii remotes... yeah, that's it. The Wii remotes. (Okay, it's for a single mom's Weeeee! remote...)
  10. Well Adjusted Children. I understand this isn't something you can buy at the store, but that's truly the best gift any mom, especially a single mom, can get. All moms constantly worry if we are raising our kids right, but single moms- we worry about the lack of a stable, healthy relationship in our kids' lives and what that could do to them, or how not having a father figure around constantly will affect our daughters, or if our sons will treat women better than our ex-boyfriend treated us. So, if having well adjusted kids could be boxed up and sold at the local 24 hour superstore, then yes, please, I'll take 2.
